Korea’s AI Future and Independence

Watch Professor Hosung Jo cover Korea's plan to be a trustworthy global AI hub through ethical leadership and ASEAN expansion.

Korea’s global AI strategy relies on three key partnerships. U.S. alliances provide advanced technology access through Samsung-Google collaborations and NVIDIA superclusters. European cooperation focuses on AI ethics, with Korea implementing Explainable AI (XAI) aligned to GDPR standards. In ASEAN’s large digital market, Naver Cloud and Kakao Pay are expanding with mobile-first services. Korea participates actively in multilateral groups like OECD and GPAI. However, challenges include brain drain, dependency on foreign cloud providers, and geopolitical tensions. To build independence, Korea is constructing domestic GPU clusters and developing HyperCLOVA X to become a neutral AI hub.
