Essential skillsets of future quants

In this video, Dr Wang will share his thoughts on the essential skills of the next generation quants.

Quants, as the name shows, need to grasp solid quantitative skills. No matter which side of the industry (buy or sell side) she wishes to work in, common skills include stochastic calculus, numerical analysis, statistics, and coding.

The development of the industry has required the next generation of Quants to grasp more skills than those above. As we see from job advertisements from leading companies, two major changes are happening.

  • The gap between Q-Quants and P-Quants is blurring due to the active interaction between the two sides of the business. For instance, the buy-side P-Quants may involve in trading volatility and its derivatives, while the sell-side Q-Quants also want to use regression tools to predict the market.
  • The machine learning tool is clearly a trending tool cherished by both sides. It can be used for prediction tasks and accelerating numerical computations.

In the last, we offer some useful advice and materials for interviews.
