When should we refer for an orthodontic assessment? BOS guidance

When should I refer for an orthodontic assessment? BOS guidance
In the previous video we went through when are the best time points in a child’s development to look out for upcoming problems. There is published guidance on this, from the British Orthodontic Society (BOS). It is freely downloadable from their website.

The guidance (if you want to read it) can be found here.

https://bos.org.uk/professionals-members/information-for-dentists/making-an-orthodontic-referral/when-should-i-refer-for-an-orthodontic-assessment/

The guidance is comprehensive and detailed and well worth looking at. It’s a little bit complicated in places but provides a solid basis for understanding when you should think about referring.

There is an infographic here as well which brings some clarity to the topic, particularly with regards to the different stages of dental development. For our UK based learners it also gives a concise description of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) which to an extent dictates what you can and can’t refer to local services.
