Concluding thoughts

Watch Olakunle Alonge, Svea Closser, Anna Kalbarczyk, and Aditi Rao summarize the course "Building Alliances in Global Health". (Step 5.23)
8.6
ANNA KALBARCZYK: A journey that began in the Americas in the 1980s resulted in the largest global public health coalition to date in terms of its magnitude and reach.
20.2
ADITI RAO: Thanks to 30 years of global collaboration, policy development, and priority setting, resource mobilization, community engagement, and social mobilization at the grassroots levels, and financing, countries have continued to reaffirm their commitment to polio eradication.
37.6
SVEA CLOSSER: Through this course, we saw examples of consensus building and advocacy at global, regional, and local levels, as well as cross-learning and transfer of knowledge. We learned that it is critical to unify partners around a common vision, spread the vision to key stakeholders, and achieve strategic alignment among all involved.
61.2
OLAKUNLE ALONGE: We also explored the many ways that achieving these can be very complex. Two themes reach across all of the topic in this course. The first is the importance of context. There is no one size fits all solution for a global program.
78.3
ADITI RAO: Success involves understanding contexts at all levels from the politics of global decision making to the issues facing a remote village far from the nearest road.
89.2
SVEA CLOSSER: Of course, no one person or entity can understand all of the world’s contexts. So thoughtful, strong collaborations are needed.
97.8
ANNA KALBARCZYK: The second theme is the key role of the relationship between vertical programs and health systems. Global disease control programs interact with local health systems, and building truly strong partnerships with them is extremely important.
114
OLAKUNLE ALONGE: As you have explored in this course, trust is built in communities when health services are consistent and helpful across the board, not just for one disease or intervention.
127.3
ADITI RAO: Alliance building in global health is a critically important activity. It shapes the outcomes of global health programs just as much as the effectiveness of the medical intervention they are delivering.
138.9
SVEA CLOSSER: Whether at the global level or with local communities, we hope this course has given you helpful ideas and strategies to try out as you build alliances in your own work.
