Networking can provide great opportunities to establish contacts and referrals. The benefit of professional networks is that you often find yourself in the company of like-minded individuals who are also networking, who often have common purposes and importantly are likely to help each other out. Networking enables insight into the dynamics within your industry and other related (and sometimes non-related) industries. It is one way of staying connected to the community or industry.

The most productive relationships (be it personal or professional) are almost always the positive ones. Relationships are between human beings and it is all about interacting and communication. Get into the habit of introducing people and make an effort to connect others (remember it’s not just about you). Establishing relationships can be difficult, but once established, take the time to nurture them. It’s a good idea to reconnect with key relationships either regularly or periodically. If you don’t have a particular reason to follow up, just do a check in. Say hello. Ask them how they are doing. It can be simple inquiry on how one of their projects are doing. Keep it simple, short and sweet.
