Keywords

Ín this article, you will learn about using keywords to your advantage within your CV and job seeking.
A magnifying glass with the word Keywords clearly visible inside. Behind and on the sides there are other words that are blurred, such as vision, motivation, flexibility and goal-oriented.
Okay, so you’ve made some preparations, understood what the job is about and ensured that you want it. Now what? Collecting a list of keywords from the job ad is a great way to get started on the cover letter.

What are keywords?

Keywords are the words that tell you about the job. They could be:

  • Verbs that explain about the job tasks, such as develop, manage or research
  • Adjectives that tell you about the personal qualities they would like, such as enthusiastic, reliable, or a team player
  • Special training such as coding languages or certain computer programmes

Identify keywords in a job ad

For this task, do the following:

  1. Start with finding an ad for a job that you would like to apply for.
  2. Then highlight or make a list of the keywords from the job ad. Match these keywords to your skills, strengths, and personal qualities which you listed in last week’s exercise, Self-inventory with SWOT. This will give you an overview of where your qualifications match with what the employer is looking for.

Once that is done, you are ready to get started on writing the cover letter itself.
