Learning online with Deakin

At Deakin University, we believe the best learning occurs when we offer engaging learning experiences and make your learning outcomes clear.
Deakin’s FutureLearn courses offer you the opportunity to learn more about the topics, ideas, and issues that matter to you. They connect you with our leading educators, subject matter experts, and other industry professionals. And empower you to engage with other course participants in a peer-supported learning environment. FutureLearn is an intuitive and easy to use online learning platform that allows you to read articles, watch videos– with or without subtitles– download and view transcripts of videos, access relevant links, and download useful documents, engage in purposely designed learning tasks, and complete quizzes and tests to progressively assess your understanding.
To get the most out of your Deakin FutureLearn experience, refer to the ‘To do’ tab to see a list of all activities and steps in your course. While we encourage you to work through each step in order, you can also use the ‘To do’ menu or forward and back arrows to skip forward and back between steps at any time. Follow the ‘Your task’ prompts provided by your educators to consolidate and extend your learning. Discover additional topic-related links under ‘See also’ or other useful documents and resources under ‘Downloads’. Be aware that when you select a link on FutureLearn, it will automatically open on the same window.
If you want to open up a new window, right click and select ‘Open Link in New Tab’. Use the ‘Join discussion’ and ‘Comments’ buttons to get involved, ask questions, and share ideas, perspectives, and resources with other learners. You can also Like, Reply, and Bookmark other posts or follow other learners. And keep up to date with what’s happening by selecting the ‘Activity’ tab. When you finished this step select the ‘Mark as complete’ button to keep track of which steps you previously completed. Use the ‘Progress’ tab to view your progress. If your course includes tests, you can track what your average assessment score is.
At Deakin University, we believe the best learning occurs when we offer engaging learning experiences and make your learning outcomes clear.

Our learning philosophy

Deakin University is a pioneer in innovative online learning, and several key principles underpin all our online courses, which are designed to:
  • challenge you with new and interesting ideas
  • prompt you to connect and engage with other learners and Deakin educators
  • test your knowledge and understanding against clearly defined learning outcomes.

Get involved

Getting the most out of your online learning experience begins with getting involved.
Our courses are designed for adult learners from around the globe who, like you, have diverse work, life and study experiences. One of the key ways to optimise your learning is to connect, respond and engage in topic-related conversations with other participants.
Likewise, participating in the tasks set by your educators is a critical step in getting the most out of this course.
To find out more about getting the most out of FutureLearn’s social learning features, see these six tips and tools.

Be mindful of others

Sometimes your educators might ask you to share personal opinions or experiences that may be sensitive or controversial in nature. In such situations, you should only share your thoughts if you’re comfortable doing so.
While we encourage robust debate, we also ask you to observe the FutureLearn Code of Conduct and be respectful of other participants and their individual points of view.
