Collaboration code of conduct

The final step this week is to look at all the different facets of collaboration that we’ve explored so far and collate them into one central ‘code of conduct’ for your team.

This is the breakdown of the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of your collaboration. This should be established at the start of the project, and can be used throughout when you regularly reflect on how you are working together.


This is where you outline what it is you’re working on together. As you’re doing this, remember:

  • Outline what success looks like
  • Set objectives using SMART – are the goals specific, measurable, actionable, realistic and timed
  • What are the parameters and boundaries of your project – this includes the your deadlines, budgets and other resources, and also personal and team parameters like other commitments, skill gaps and other collaborators who may join later in a project


As you’re outlining how you will be working together, remember:

  • What do you all expect from each other in terms of contribution?
  • What are your norms, ground rules and values?
  • How frequently should you meet and stay in contact?
  • How will you make decisions?

Download the accompanying workbook, which summarises all the activities from week 1. Then, book in a meeting with your team at the start of a project to run through this in detail, making sure you hear everyone’s point of view as you go and reflect on your strengths and skill gaps as a team.
