Greater Manchester Institute of Technology

Working in conjunction with Salford Business School, University of Salford
Salford Business School worked with employers across Greater Manchester to develop a user-friendly, practice-focused course that responds directly to the needs of businesses in the region, particularly the development of managers’ capability to recognise, understand and manage cyber security risk.

The course was shaped through dialogue with employers and industry partners who highlighted that many managers are expected to take responsibility for cyber security outcomes in their teams without having had the opportunity to build confidence or understanding in how digital threats, data protection obligations and security culture affect everyday business performance. Rather than creating a technically complex programme aimed at specialists, the focus was on clarity, relevance and practical application within everyday managerial contexts.

Through this collaboration, Salford Business School combined academic expertise in governance, risk and organisational behaviour with employer insight into the real cyber security pressures facing managers, to co-design a course that supports managers to recognise risk, respond to incidents with confidence, and engage more effectively with the security culture of their organisation.

The resulting course builds managerial understanding of how cyber security can be used to protect organisational performance, safeguard reputation and support resilient decision making, without requiring specialist technical knowledge. It is designed to fit alongside work commitments and reflects the realities faced by managers operating in complex, fast-changing and increasingly threat-exposed environments.

This collaborative approach demonstrates the importance of partnership between higher education and industry in developing management capability that enables businesses to take cyber security seriously at every level of the organisation, not only within specialist IT functions, and to sustain long-term resilience and success.
