Getting started in Week 1

What you will learn in week 1.

Welcome to Week 1

Cyber security is no longer the sole responsibility of IT departments. Every manager, in every organisation, in every sector and every country, plays a role in keeping their teams and their data safe. This week introduces the foundations you need to begin thinking and acting like a security-aware leader.

Over the coming three hours, you will explore what cyber security means in a business context, why it matters now more than ever, and how the fundamental principles that underpin it connect directly to your responsibilities as a manager.

Before you begin your learning, it is important to recognise the need to maintain the currency of your knowledge. Cybersecurity is a fast moving field, and managers need to remain alert to the evolving challenges facing organisations, including securing digital assets, protecting data and maintaining business operations in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, cloud dependency and the emerging reality of quantum computing.

This week you will:

  • Understand what cyber security means for organisations and why it is a leadership concern
  • Explore the CIA Triad: the three core principles of information security
  • Examine the real-world impact of cyber threats on businesses and individuals
  • Consider how digital transformation has changed the risk landscape
  • Analyse a global case study of a high-profile cyber breach
  • Carry out an interactive activity mapping cyber risks in your own context
  • Complete a reflective homework task and a weekly knowledge check
