Currency of Knowledge: Quantum Safe Security and Cryptographic Transition

Quantum computing is no longer something organisations should regard solely as a distant technological development. Future sufficiently powerful quantum computers could undermine forms of public key cryptography currently used to protect networks, systems and information.

The response is post quantum cryptography, or PQC. Importantly, organisations do not need to wait for a cryptographically relevant quantum computer before acting.

The UK NCSC published a specific migration timetable in March 2025:

  • By 2028: understand the cryptographic estate and develop an initial migration plan
  • By 2031: migrate the highest priority services and establish a comprehensive roadmap
  • By 2035: complete migration to post quantum cryptography across systems, services and products.
