Introduction to week 5

A short introductory article to week 5 of the course Deep Learning for Bioscientists - spatial approaches and more
Welcome to the final week of the course.

Hopefully by now you should have a good ida of how deep learning, and in particular convolutional neural networks (CNNs), can be used for classification and regression tasks using image data.

We will wrap up the course by touching on some of the other tasks CNNs can be used for starting with a very useful task across a wide range of disciplines, image segmentation.

In particular we will look at:

  • encoder-decoder architectures and image segmentation
  • heatmap regression
  • bounding box methods
  • multi-task learning – more than one objective

Week 5 learning outcomes

  • Explore the use of deep learning for image segmentation
  • Compare other deep learning approaches such as heatmap regression and multi-task learning
