Ending remarks for the course

Watch Jimmy Whitworth conclude this course with a summary of the three weeks.
JIMMY WHITWORTH: We have now reached the end of our course, ‘Disease Outbreaks in Low- and Middle-Income Countries’. I really hope you have enjoyed its content and the diversity of its resources. Over the last three weeks, we have heard from a wide range of experts in the field of outbreak preparedness and response in low- and middle-income countries. We have discussed what outbreaks are and why they matter, the history and current state of disease outbreaks, new and continuing challenges in outbreak response, and how we can be better prepared to meet these changing needs. We’ve explored not only the response to outbreaks, but also the importance of preparedness, including the roles of surveillance and research to prepare, detect, respond and learn.
We further reflected on what an outbreak response is, how multidisciplinary teams are triggered to respond and how these responses are currently funded and coordinated. Together, we reflected on the importance of outbreak preparedness and response, both now and in the future. We have also explored the new and continuing challenges in outbreak response, and how this may develop in the future, including potential innovations and modern technology. While outbreaks are here to stay, our ability to prepare and respond to them continues to advance. I’d like to thank you all for joining our course, and for participating so eagerly in discussions with both our team and your peers.
Thank you also to all the experts who contributed to the course and to the support team that helped bring this course to life. Our hope is that we have learned and continue to learn from infectious disease outbreaks in low- and middle-income countries. As a result, we’re all able to prepare and respond more effectively to prevent and reduce the impact of outbreaks for better global health in the future.
