They look to apply their learning. Take active part in your education. Recognise what you’re bringing to the university. Put up their hand and ask questions. A successful Coventry University student is confident, resilient, understands their subject in detail, knows where they have gaps in their knowledge. For us,
30.5
a Coventry student is one who really can take their transferable skills. Our students are organised, they plan, they work hard. They enquire, they critically evaluate, they innovate. So, a successful student is somebody who’s curious, is not afraid to ask questions and challenges their peers and tutors to find answers. One of the most important things is to be there, to be in class, to engage with your tutors, to engage with your peers. But it’s about you being part of the class, but going out and reading about the subject, finding out more about your subject. I think we look for our students to engage in the learning process, to become part of a learning community.

To take their independent study but to take that into group and team activities and to look to apply their learning. They’ve then acquired a level of self-confidence that enables them to do the next step because university is, for them, it’s just a short three-year, four-year, five-year in the whole of their professional career. Important do’s and don’t for a student in a UK university, particularly Coventry University, do engage with your subject, do get to know your tutor, do get to know the students you’re studying with, your peer group, because they’re all essential elements that are going to lead to your success.

One of the do’s for me would be to see yourself as a member of the global community and think about what that means in the way you approach your learning, whether it’s in the UK, or elsewhere across the globe. Find out about the university and the city that that university’s in. Find out about that community and become part of it. Don’t just avoid things, don’t miss deadlines, make sure that you plan your time properly and all of those things apply both on campus and online. Don’t spend too much time studying on your own if there are opportunities to study with others. When you feel alone don’t stay in your accommodation.

As an international student going to study a higher education system which is not one that you’re familiar with is always an interesting, challenging and daunting time in some ways. I was an international student myself, so I understand some of the pressures. You’ve got language, you’ve got all the cultural aspects. In a more studied based sense, it’s really important that you understand that we do work lots in groups. So, peer learning, groups of students working together to solve problems under the supervision of a tutor who’s there to guide you as a group but equally that you learn from other people within that group. Group work can be really difficult if you’re not familiar with it.
206.8
It’s often difficult even if you are familiar with it because you’re dependent on other people and how you motivate other people to deliver their best, recognising that your standards and their standards sometimes don’t align is really important. So, group work is a big challenge but one that leads to enormous benefit. It is in the end how business commerce and life works.

Now that we have listened for gist and understand the main points from the video, it is important that we listen again and try to focus on the detail that we might have missed the first time around.

When you are listening to a lecture it is a good idea to quickly write down any words or information you don’t understand so that you can spend time finding the definitions for these words after the lecture and use these words to complete your understanding of what has been said.

Watch the video again. This time, focus on the detail and make a note of any words you don’t understand.
