Things we ultimately don’t know

Listening exercise – some tapes with unknown contents

Listening Exercise

Of course, by the time the tapes made it to an archive both Roberto and Poldi had passed away.

While Poldi had undertaken a massive job of documenting what she knew about the archives contents, there is still a lot about the archive we don’t know. A lot of what we don’t know relates to Gerhard electronic music. There are a number of tapes that are sketches or assemblages of electronic sounds that we don’t know how they relate to his finished works. Were they part of pieces? Or were they simply experiments? We may never know but we can hope that in time more information might be unearthed that will help us to better understand these documents.

For the final listening exercise, here are some of the tapes we don’t have detailed information on. Have a listen and then let us know in the comments what you can hear in these recordings and what kinds of applications you think the sounds might be used for!
