Glossary
E-Mobility is a complex and broad field. Therefore, the most important terms related to E-Mobility are introduced here. Please keep this glossary in mind as you progress through the course and come back whenever you do not understand a word.

  • E-Mobility:
    • E-Mobility refers to the use of electric powertrain technologies, in-vehicle information, communication technologies, and connected infrastructure to enable the electric propulsion of vehicles and fleets.
  • Sustainability:
    • Sustainability aims to prevent the depletion of natural or physical resources so that they will remain available for the long term.
  • Internal combustion engine (ICE):
    • An ICE is an engine that generates energy by burning fuel inside. Most cars have internal combustion engines.
  • Electric vehicles (EV):
    • A car, e-scooter, e-bike, or other vehicle with an electric motor powered wholly or partially by batteries.
  • Battery electric vehicles (BEV):
    • BEV is another term for EVs. They run on battery power without the help of an internal combustion engine’.
  • Hybrid electric vehicles (HEV):
    • Hybrid EVs (HEVs) have both a petrol- or diesel-powered combustion engine and an electric engine. HEVs increase fuel efficiency by either switching from one engine to the other or adding additional power depending on driving conditions.
  • Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV):
    • PHEVs extend the concept of the standard hybrid vehicle and have both an internal combustion engine and a battery-powered electric motor.
  • Powertrain:
    • This is a set of components that move the car, including the engine, transmission, driveshaft, axles, and differential.
