Strategies and Business Models Around the World

As the development of E-Mobility becomes more and more important in a global context, it’s essential to know the different steps towards E-Mobility that other countries are already taking.

This article will mainly:

  • describe the strategies for implementing E-Mobility in some countries around the world
  • illustrate some long-term objectives related to the transition to EVs.

Chile’s strategies for the future of E-Mobility

Chile’s strategy has four main objectives:

  • all small and medium-sized vehicles sold in the country from 2035 onwards must be zero-emission vehicles
  • all public transport vehicles (including buses) sold from the same year must also be zero-emission
  • all sales of land transport vehicles, including intercity buses and freight trucks, must be zero emission by 2045
  • all sales of heavy machinery in the country’s key industries (mining, forestry, construction and agriculture) must be zero-emission between 2035 and 2040.

Japan’s strategies for the future of E-Mobility:

The Government of Japan (GOJ) has set a target of:

  • by 2035, all new cars sold will be environmentally friendly
  • in Japan, clean cars are called Clean Energy Vehicles, or CEVs, to distinguish them from fossil fuel vehicles
  • the GOJ offers to subsidize part of the cost of purchasing CEVs, such as batteries, plug-in hybrids, and fuel cell EVs
  • in 2018, the country had set a target of 15-20% EV sales in Passenger Light-duty Vehicles (PLDVs) by 2020 and 20-30% by 2030, which is further supporting the deployment of electric two-wheelers market in the country
  • the declining price of lithium-ion batteries, rapidly increasing adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs), and the increasing renewable energy sector are the key factors to make a considerable contribution towards the growth of the electric two-wheeler market in the country.

Uganda’s strategies for the future of E-Mobility

E-Mobility is an emerging trend in Uganda, and the government is working to promote its adoption in the country:

Some of the strategies for the future of E-Mobility in Uganda include: + raising public awareness + developing supporting infrastructure + providing incentives for EV adoption.

The government is also working to attract private investment in the sector and promote local EV manufacturing. These efforts are expected to create new business opportunities, reduce carbon emissions, and create new sources of employment.

Mexico’s strategies for the future of E-Mobility:

The transition in Mexico:

In Mexico, 84% of state revenues come from federal sources, leading to high costs and a significant reliance on local governments to fund mobility projects, a significant barrier to EV adoption.

In order to explore what kind of business models can make up a new fleet of zero-emission vehicles, they are based on the following aspects that a new business model for mobility projects should include:

  • component inversion
  • source of resources
  • implementation mechanisms
  • financial products

Conclusion:

In conclusion, countries are implementing innovative policies and business models to encourage the adoption of E-Mobility.

These include building charging infrastructure, promoting fiscal and financial incentives, stimulating the production and sale of EVs, and raising public awareness of the benefits of E-Mobility.

As technology advances and EV prices fall, more countries in the Global South are expected to adopt these strategies and business models to drive the transition to a more sustainable future.
