Gender Equity in Transportation

In the previous step, we discussed the importance of ensuring women’s safety when using public transport. Niksa Kaven-Moser from PEM Motion had the opportunity to interview Sonal Shah, the founder of The Urban Catalyst, based in New Delhi. The Urban Catalyst focuses on action-oriented, mixed-method research to create sustainable and gender equitable cities, public spaces and transport.

The interview focuses on the key challenges of creating gender equitable transport in India. It highlights the importance of collecting data on travel behaviour, incidents of sexual harassment, perceptions of safety and travel experiences on public transport systems. These findings aim to improve the design of these systems and address the issue of limited diversity within them. The interview also touches on the inclusion of women in the EV labour market. Sonal Shah also offers advice on how sustainable and gender equitable transport solutions can be replicated globally.

Sonal is an active member of the ‘Women Mobilize Women’ initiative launched by TUMI – a network of women change-makers from around the world. This initiative aims to drive change in the mobility sector by promoting diversity.
