The final naturopathic principle we will cover is Critically analyse accumulated knowledge Scientia critica.

This naturopathic principle has yet to be codified along with wellness but it present the contemporary trajectory naturopathic medicine is taking as well as the importance of this principle in the delivery of safe and effective naturopathic care. Scientia critica is described as a naturopaths ability to critically analyse accumulated knowledge that includes scientific knowledge, knowledge about the individual self (that is the knowledge-base of the naturopath) and the values of the patient Logan et al., 2018.

This proposed principle relates to the continued influence and uptake evidence-based practice is having on the contemporary naturopathic profession. The key focus of this principle relates to the ability of a naturopath to be able to analyse and judge knowledge or research evidence that relates to the health of patients. In clinical practice this may relate to the ability to critically evaluate knowledge and evidence that concerns safety and efficacy of naturopathic medicines and clinical approaches. The authors of this proposed principle describe the ability of the principle to uphold and anchor the other described principles in this short course. Importantly, as naturopathic medicine continues to evolve and adopt to the healthcare environment and become more evidence-informed, naturopaths will need to follow this evolution. Scientia critica is clinically relevant and can support the ongoing advancement of naturopathic medicine while staying relevant to the core codified naturopathic principles.
