How to Conduct User Testing

we should set aside our role as developers and act as complete observers, focusing on observing and recording players’ behaviour.

User testing can be conducted from the following aspects:

First, we need to clarify our responsibilities during the testing process. In actual game testing, we should set aside our role as developers and act as complete observers, focusing on observing and recording players’ behaviour. As testers, we should remain as objective and impartial as possible, minimising our influence on the players. Ideally, we can arrange for people outside the project to communicate with the players.

Next, we need to define the content of the test. We can choose a specific part of the game for testing, such as the second chapter, the interface interaction of the equipment system, or set a challenge for the players, such as moving from point A to point B. The more specific the testing content, the more we can shorten the test time and reduce the complexity of data processing. Once the test content is defined, we can prepare the test process and possible questions.

The test process includes an introduction, pre-test interview, test phase, post-test discussion, and closing remarks. We will now go over the arrangements for each part.

Introduction

Duration: 2-3 minutes. Before the test begins, we should welcome the test subjects and express our gratitude, then introduce ourselves briefly. Next, we should briefly explain the test content, objectives, and process, and ask whether they agree to being recorded. We must clarify that the recordings are solely for game design reference and will not be made public. If necessary, we can prepare relevant agreements. If the project content requires confidentiality, we can also prepare a non-disclosure agreement to protect against information leakage.

Pre-Test Interview

Duration: approximately 5 minutes. The goal is to get to know the test subjects and help them relax and get accustomed to talking. We can ask the participants if they have played similar types of games and gather their opinions on them. For example, “Have you played any games of this type? What parts of these games attracted you?”

Test Phase

Duration: 15-20 minutes. Before the formal test begins, we need to emphasise a few key points. First, inform the test subjects that the game is still under development and does not represent the final product; second, clarify that the purpose of the test is to collect feedback on the game; and finally, encourage them to express their thoughts throughout the test.
