Rules and Fun

Rules are not just about what can or cannot be done; more importantly, they create changes during the gameplay.
Rules are not just about what can or cannot be done; more importantly, they create changes during the gameplay.

When a player makes a move, the system provides a result, which then influences the next choice. Much of the fun comes from this back-and-forth between action and feedback. Different mechanics can lead fun in different directions.

The value of rules lies in generating dynamic changes, which in turn create fun. Different interaction mechanisms create different types of enjoyment, such as a sense of challenge, social experience, or dramatic tension. Designers must adjust the rules to maintain game balance and prevent positive feedback from undermining the game’s tension.

Furthermore, the interaction between players and rules is crucial. In many games, players adjust the rules based on habits, forming new understandings. Video game rules are usually strictly enforced by the system, lacking flexibility, while traditional games allow players to redefine the rules through consensus, thereby influencing the game experience.
