The fundamental factor determining whether a game is fun is its game design.
The fundamental factor determining whether a game is fun is its game design. Game designers decide all the content of the game, from the game type and player controls to the settings of every stat and the placement of each block.
Story Designers are responsible for the game’s background story and character design. They are involved in building the game world, developing the story framework, setting up each event, and writing every line of dialogue.
System Designers are in charge of designing the main gameplay mechanics, including the combat system, economy system, and character progression system. They plan out the detailed flow of each system and create a positive feedback loop, ensuring that players can progress smoothly toward the game’s goals.
Level Designers are mainly responsible for creating the environments players will interact with, designing the basic structure of game scenes, and positioning enemies and interactive items. Great level designers use the layout of the scenes to guide the player’s gaze, helping them easily understand the location of objectives and the direction to move in.
Balance Designers play a key role in ensuring the game’s balance. They are involved in defining character attributes such as health, attack power, and more, as well as the experience points dropped by defeated enemies, the experience rewards for completing quests, and the value and drop rates of items and currency.
Interface Designers (also known as User Experience Designers), in contrast to creating challenges in the game, focus on reducing the difficulty players have in understanding the game interface. The goal is to make the interface as intuitive as possible, even to the point where players don’t realise they are interacting with the game interface. Interface designers are responsible for the design of each functional screen and ensuring that players can easily navigate between these screens.
