What games are and how they got here

Let’s dive into both the history and the essence of what makes a game a game!

This video introduces games from two main perspectives: their historical development and their core concept.

First, it traces how games evolved from early human imitation and ritual activities, to structured agricultural-era play, to mature board and strategy games in advanced civilizations. It then moves into the history of video games, including early computer experiments, arcade and console games, PC gaming, AAA cinematic experiences, and mobile games.

Second, the video explains what makes something a game. It highlights key elements such as rules, goals, challenges, interaction, feedback, and player experience. It also clarifies the difference between “game” and “play”: games are more structured and goal-oriented, while play is freer, more exploratory, and open-ended.

Finally, the video raises the question of whether games can be considered the “ninth art,” emphasizing that interactivity is central to how games create meaning, emotion, and expression.
