The Magical Magic Circle

Have you ever noticed how, when you’re deep in a game, you can feel totally absorbed in its world?

This video introduces the concept of the “magic circle” in games. It explains that games create an invisible boundary between the game world and real life, allowing players to enter a temporary space with its own rules, goals, and meanings.

The video uses examples to show how players usually understand when a game begins and ends, and how the rules of play are different from everyday life. It also explains that some games, such as ARGs, live-action roleplaying, or location-based games, deliberately blur the boundary between games and reality.

The main focus is to help students understand how the magic circle shapes player experience, and how designers can use, expand, or challenge this boundary in creative ways.
