Going beyond

Prof Parveen Yaqoob explains why a global citizenship mindset is so important to the University of Reading and ways to take your learning further.

Higher Education that provides students with a global and future-facing outlook is one of the University of Reading’s 4 core graduate attributes. Watch Professor Parveen Yaqoob, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, explain why empowering students with this attribute is so important to the University.

All UoR programmes inculcate and enable students to demonstrate:

  • Valuing of multiple perspectives and diversity to enable students to make well-informed ethical decisions.
  • Intercultural competence and international engagement.
  • Integrating social and civic responsibility, exploring global citizenship, and positively contributing to addressing sustainability issues within the context of their discipline, their personal lives, professions, and communities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and adapt to different work or study contexts.

Going beyond at the University of Reading

Global Graduate Programme

Open to all University of Reading students, the university-wide Global Graduate Programme helps build the knowledge and skills necessary for today’s international workplace.

As an eligible student, you create your own programme and select from a range of modules with an emphasis on the central themes of intercultural competence and communication.

You can also top up your degree by learning a new language through the Institution-wide Language Programme (IWLP). This offers modules in 10 languages from beginner to intermediate level which you can take alongside your degree.

Studying abroad

Students who go abroad are 20% less likely to be out of work, 10% more likely to be in ‘graduate jobs’ 6 months after graduation, and are 7% higher average wage earners 6 months after graduation, compared to those who don’t go abroad (UKi (2017) Gone International: Mobility).

Find out more about the options available through the University of Reading for UK students and for international students, such as the Beijing Institute of Technology international summer programme, opportunities to study at the UoR Malaysia campus, and summer schools with partner universities. You’ll also find information about funding and support.

RED awards

The Reading Experience and Development Global Engagement Award is one of the University of Reading’s Official Skills Awards. They are open to all students and will help you to enhance your experience at the university whilst developing your skills and will give employers key examples of where you have put these skills into action.
