One person cannot represent every person

Businesses can’t expect someone who satisfies a checkbox to represent everyone else who satisfies that checkbox.

Every single person is different, and no one person can represent the entire perspective of millions. Just because someone identifies as a member of one community doesn’t mean they aren’t also a member of other, seemingly contradictory communities.

For companies to put this burden of driving change onto individuals who satisfy checkboxes is not immoral – it’s just silly.

There is no one-size-fits-all opinion or solution to anything when we address society’s issues. Instead of striving for a fixed conclusion so we can ‘box it off’, we should open up constant conversations among our many colleagues, friends and employees.

To increase the diversity of thought, we simply need to hire more diverse people and encourage those conversations.

In this activity, we’ll explore the first four symptoms of groupthink and mitigation strategies for them.
