What common crime related incidents do police deal with?

There are lots of different types of crime and nearly everyone will experience a crime at some point in their lives. One in five people were affected by crime last year which equates to ten million people. It affects people from all backgrounds, locations and ages; more than one in ten children have been a victim of crime in the past year. A crime is a deliberate act that causes physical or psychological harm, damage to or loss of property, and is against the law.

Police officers deal with many crime incidents but as a first responder there are a number crimes of that a frontline officer will attend most frequently and become quite adept at dealing with them:

  • Theft

  • Theft of motor vehicle

  • Theft from a motor vehicle

  • Burglary

  • Criminal damage

  • Fraud

  • Drugs – Possession, consumption, supply of or the intent to supply illegal drugs

  • Sexual offences – A broad category of sexual offences, including rape, indecent assault and unlawful sexual intercourse

  • Violence against the person – Includes a range of offences from minor offences such as harassment and common assault, to serious offences such as murder, actual bodily ) harm and grievous bodily harm
