Now that you’ve learned a little bit about artificial intelligence (AI) and looked at some of the tools you can use, you can probably think about how how you can use AI further. But imagine you’ve just used an AI tool such as ChatGPT to write some code for a website, or some content for a presentation at work.

Is that ethical? Who actually owns that work?

“Ethical” refers to principles or guidelines that govern good or right behaviour, distinguishing between what is right and wrong. Ethics provides a framework for making decisions and determining the appropriateness of actions based on principles such as fairness, honesty, integrity, and respect for others. Ethical behaviour is often shaped by cultural, societal, religious, or philosophical beliefs.

In the fast-moving field of AI, it is also important to think about how AI tools might be regulated in future. There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes in governments across the world, looking at how current laws apply to AI, so it’s useful to understand a little about the sorts of concerns that people have about regulation.

In this activity, you’ll be thinking about the ethics of using AI, the negative ethical impacts of AI and how these might be reduced, and how regulation might impact AI in future.
