Key expressions 2

The second expression we’ll be learning today is “좋아하는 배우 사인을 받을 수 있으면 좋겠어요.(I hope to get an autograph from my favorite actor.)”

Everyone wishes for a happy ending to everything they do. For instance, if you are taking an exam, you wish to get a good grade; if you plan to travel, you hope the trip to be fun. As such, to express your wishes and needs, you use the expression ‘-(으)면 좋겠어요(I hope/ I wish -).’ This expression is used with adjectives and verbs, and if the word contains a bottom consonant, such as “있으면 좋겠어요 (I wish I had -),” and “받으면 좋겠어요 (I hope I get -),” you would use ‘-으면 좋겠어요.’ Yet, if the word does not contain a bottom consonant, such as ‘싸면 좋겠어요 (I hope it’s cheap),’ or ‘만나면 좋겠어요 (I hope to meet -),’ you would use ‘-면 좋겠어요.’

Now, Let’s practice more with the next example.

Example
  • 이민호 씨가 새로운 드라마를 찍는대요. => 빨리 방송을 시작하면 좋겠어요.

  • 다음 주에 친구들하고 등산을 가기로 했어요. => 그날 비가 안오면 좋겠어요.
