Key Expressions 1

Key expressions 1

The expression we will learn today is: “I bought them for my parents.”

Do you also have a special day similar to the Parents’ Day in Korea to celebrate appreciation for your parents? How do you express your gratitude to your parents?

People often prepare gifts to express their appreciation, and when you want to say that you prepare the gifts for your parents to express your gratitude, you can use the expression ‘-(으)려고 샀어요. (bought it for -)”

The expression ‘-(으)려고’ is used with verbs to describe the purpose of an action.

If the verb contains a bottom consonant, such as ‘읽으려고, (to read)’ you use the expression ‘-으려고,’ and if the verb does not contain a bottom consonant, you can simply use ‘-려고,’ such as ‘주려고. (to give you -)”

Let’s practice while looking at example.

  • 내일이 스승의 날이어서 선생님 드리려고 제가 만들었어요.
  • 내일이 어린이날이어서 조카 주려고 샀어요.
  • 내일이 졸업식이어서 입고 가려고 샀어요.
