A comprehensive permanent rehabilitation program


Dr. Ho will introcue a prospective study: a predictional system of acute expression of COPD that was performed at the National Taiwan University Hospital in 2021.

The system contains four components:

  1. Using a wearable device. The device will automatically collected lifestyle data including physical activities, heart rate, and sleep patterns by Bluetooth to the original customized apps, and was further connected to the lifestyle observation platform.
  2. Using a lifestyle observation platform.
  3. A home air quality–sensing device called EDIMAX Airbox. The environmental data in the patient’s living environment like temperature, humidity, and PM2.5 levels were collected from this home air quality–sensing device and the open environmental application programs interface (API).
  4. Using a personal health device app. Compared with previous studies, these have comprehensively improved the performance of the AECOPD(Acute Exacerbation Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) prediction model by adding objective lifestyle and environmental data.

In this study, the research team attempts to predict whether a patient with COPD will experience an acute exacerbation of their condition within the next 7 days. Multiple AECOPD prediction models were deployed on the server. Through the process, daily prediction results are provided to support physicians in making decisions. The results indicate that lifestyle and environmental data facilitate the precise management of the user’s health conditions, and can be produced early warnings of the AECOPD.

Move to the next part, health education and respiratory therapy. Dr. ho will introduce how we improve heavy breathing in COPD patients. There are some methods that can be applied to improve the problem. Such as breathing exercise, lung expansion therapy, bronchial hygiene, home-based pulmonary rehabilitation, and hospital-based pulmonary rehabilitation. We will continue to learn this Home-based pulmonary rehabilitation method in the next step.
