Research field of digital media technology

What disciplines are involved and how do they relate to each other? In this article, Dr Ming Yan discusses his recent research.
There are three main areas of research in digital media technology.

Key technologies

1)Media information processing technology

Video and audio coding compression, image/video content analysis, speech recognition, etc.

2)Media transmission technology

Network streaming media, P2P, wireless multimedia transmission, etc.

3)Media content management technology

Digital media database, content-based retrieval, digital rights management, digital information protection, digital media integration and distribution, etc.

Associated support technology

1)Media information acquisition and output technology

Image/video acquisition technology and equipment, 3d display technology and equipment, etc.

2)Media storage technology

Massive distributed storage, etc.

Extended application technology

1)Computer graphics and animation techniques

Graphic input, graphic modeling, graphic processing and output, complex object modeling, performance animation, etc.

2)Virtual reality technology

Dynamic virtual environment modeling, real – time 3D graphics generation, 3D display and sensors.
