Evolution of storage architecture

What developments have storage architectures undergone? In this article, Dr Ming Yan discusses his recent research.

Media storage is based on different application environments by taking a reasonable, safe and effective way to save media data to certain media and can ensure effective access, in general, can contain two aspects of the meaning: on the one hand, it is the data temporary or long-term residence of the physical media; on the other hand, it is to ensure that the data integrity of the safe storage of the way or behavior.

Overview of data and information

Data are symbols that record and can be identified with objective events, physical symbols or combinations of physical symbols that are recorded with respect to the interrelationships, states, and properties of objective things.Information is data that has been selected, analyzed and synthesized in such a way that the user can use it to get a clearer picture of what is happening.

Evolution of Storage Architecture

dawn of civilization

mankind has been looking for ways to be able to store information more efficiently. In ancient times, people remembered things by knotting ropes.

At the end of the 19th century

oracle bone inscriptions carved on tortoise shells and animal bones were discovered in the area of Xiaotun, the capital site of the Yin Dynasty in present-day Anyang, Henan Province.

During the Eastern Han Dynasty

Cai Lun invented the method of making paper from plant fibers. He took plant materials such as bark, hemp, rags, and fishing nets through the process of thwarting, pounding, copying, and baking, and eventually manufactured paper, which is the origin of modern paper.

In the late 18th and late 19th centuries

Perforated tapes and cards were used to “program” looms and other industrial machines in the late 18th and late 19th centuries, and the technology was used for data storage in the 1890 census by Herman Hollister, who originally designed a prototype for a 12-row by 24-column array of circular holes. Magnetic drum memory, which appeared in Austria in 1932 for early computers, was magnetic drum memory.

1940-1951

In January 1946, Rajchman and his colleagues at the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) invented the selective number tube, a vacuum tube-built digital storage device in which data is stored as a static charge.

In 1950, the world’s first Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Computer (EDSAC) with program storage was designed under the leadership of Dr. von Neumann.

In March 1951, the first general-purpose automatic computer, UNIVAC-I, designed by Lester Eckert and Mochrie, was delivered UNIVAC-I was the first to improve the reliability of the system by using the parity method and double arithmetic lines, and the first to experiment with automatic programming.

2000s

In the search for a better memory, people have gone to great lengths to find one, and almost every physical phenomenon that can be utilized has been explored, for example, electricity, light, sound, and magnetism.

In order to solve the problems of difficult to protect and manage information, creating information silos and increasing operational overhead, the server-centric storage architecture has been replaced by an information-centric architecture.

The continued evolution of storage technologies and storage architectures has enabled organizations to better integrate, protect, optimize and leverage their data to achieve higher returns on their information assets.
