Data center infrastructure

Data center infrastructure includes hardware components and software components. Hardware components include computers, storage systems, network equipment and backup power supplies. Software components include applications, operating systems and management software. In addition, environmental equipment such as air conditioning, fire suppression and ventilation units are also part of the infrastructure.

Characteristics of a data center

• Availability: a data center must guarantee the availability of data when there is a need.
• Security: A data center should have a complete security policy and process in place to prevent leakage of information to the
• Performance: Data center components should be able to provide optimal performance based on service levels.
• Data Integrity: Mechanisms to ensure that data remains consistent when accessed and received.
• Capacity: Data centers need sufficient resources to efficiently store and process massive amounts of data.
• Manageability: Data center management of components should be as simple and uniform as possible.

Data center operations and architecture

The 5 core components of a data center that perform basic functions are:

• Applications: computer programs that provide the logic for computer operations.
• Data Base Management System (DBMS): provides a structured way to store data into logical tables with associated relationships.
• Mainframe or Computing: refers to the computing platform on which applications and databases run.
• Network: the data pathway for communication between networked devices.
• Storage: A device that continuously stores data for subsequent use.

Often these core components are treated as separate management units, but the data processing requirements can only be met if all of these components work together.
