Cloud computing and storage

What is cloud computing? In this article, Dr Ming Yan discusses his recent research.

Introduction to Cloud Computing

Cloud computing refers to the provision of dynamically scalable and inexpensive computing services on demand over a network. It is a service related to information technology, software, and the Internet.

Cloud computing utilizes a pay-per-use model that provides available, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computer resources (resources include networks, servers, storage, application software, services) that can be rapidly provisioned.

The main features of cloud computing are as follows:

  • large-scale, distributed servers
  • Adoption of virtualization technology and easy operation for users
  • High availability and scalability
  • on-demand services
  • secure network

hierarchical storage system

Hierarchical storage is based on the importance of data, access frequency, retention time, capacity, performance and other indicators, the data to take different storage methods are stored in different performance of the storage device, through the hierarchical storage management to realize the automatic migration of data objects between storage devices.

In a hierarchical data storage structure, storage devices are generally tape libraries, disks or disk arrays. In general, high-cost, fast devices such as disks or disk arrays are used to store important information that is frequently accessed, while lower-cost storage resources such as tape libraries are used to store information that is accessed less frequently.
