Multiple view reconstruction

Two case studies from the University of Nottingham constructing 3D model reconstructions of plant leaf canopies. Presented by Professsor Tony Pridmore

The first video describes the series of image analysis processes undertaken to produce 3D plant canopy models.

Though the process as a whole is complex, each sub-task is some varation on topics and ideas covered in this course, including:

  • 3D reconstruction via multiview correspondence to make a point cloud
  • Noise removal – in this case point filtering
  • Segmentation – clustering of points into patches of approximately flat leaf
  • Combination of ideas from region growing and snakes – level set method

The resulting 3D reconstructions are surfaces, suitable for modelling light reflection and photosynthesis.
