An introduction to Using TIVA

We are really excited to have you join our community of learners as we discover more about TIVA. TIVA has several increasingly obvious advantages over inhalation anaesthetics. We believe TIVA is unfairly perceived as being complicated, difficult and riskier. Join us over the next 7 weeks where we will learn about the benefits of delivering TIVA safely to your patients, various models and depth of anaesthesia monitoring, commonly used adjuncts, increasing your chances of a smooth recovery and the nitty-gritty of some challenging patient cohorts. Lastly, we will touch on the significant impact of anaesthesia on healthcare’s carbon footprint and what we can do to contribute to the effort to reduce global warming. This course aims to dispel myths and misunderstandings and bridge the gap in translating theoretical knowledge into everyday practice.

Week 1

Barriers and Advantages of TIVA

During the first week of the course, we will focus our attention on the difficulties TIVA has faced and why it has struggled to gain a strong foothold as the default anaesthetic technique. Change can be intimidating but hopefully armed with knowledge more and more anaesthetists will make the switch! Hopefully, once you have completed this week and have a deeper understanding of the advantages of TIVA for your patients you will be motivated to continue on this journey as we get stuck into the how-to over the coming weeks.
