What is User Experience?

User Experience, often abbreviated to UX, UX/UI, UXD, CX are all terms that haven’t been floating around the business world for too long. Even though UX, as we know it, can be referred to as a modern design discipline, its origins can be traced back to a great designer at Apple circa 1993.

UX according to Don Norman. The term UX was first coined by Don Norman while he was at Apple. UX is the practice of enhancing ALL ASPECTS of user interaction with a company, its services, and its products. From first engaging with a company, to browsing a product or service, all the way to bringing it home and using it.

The Apple example is legendary. Not only do they make great products, but their care comes across even on the packaging and unboxing of the items. Before Apple, computers, and electronics came in big boxes, not charged or without a battery, they were hard to assemble, full of manuals and instructions.

The other N in the Norman Nielsen Group.

The Norman Nielsen Group is a great authority on modern UX, and Jacob Nielsen, is just as important as a counterpart. Nielsen’s work was fundamental in developing principles around usability, which defines how usable a product or service really is.

In other words, how easy and intuitive is it to use something. Or, how likely is it I will make a mistake using this product? In practice, great UX encompasses observing the whole experience a user has with the product and looking for ways to make it easier, accessible by all, and delightful – great products should be intuitive for all and a joy to use.
