Introduction to Week 4

Welcome to Week 4 of the course.

This week we will look at some tips and tricks you may need to consider when using machine learning on your data. In particular we will look at the following:

• good training practice
  • how big should your dataset be?
  • splitting datasets into validation and test sets
  • use of cross-validation
• data augmentation
  • why and how to augment datasets
  • types of data augmentation
• common challenges – including:
  • overfitting
  • the curse of dimensionality and dimensionality reduction
  • regularisation
  • class imbalance.

At the end of the week, there’s a quiz as usual, and a practical using data augmentation and cross validation.
