Week 1 Summary

Week 1 Summary
3.9
Well done. We’ve successfully made it to the end of the first week of Makerspaces for Creative Learning. We’ve outlined how experiences of learning in makerspaces can develop the kinds of skills that many employers require of a 21st century workforce, in which characteristics such as flexibility, problem solving, and creativity are key. Play and creativity can be discerned in projects in which art subjects are integrated with science, technology, engineering, and mathematic subjects, a STEAM approach, which are effective in attracting learners to STEM. Finally in this week, we have also considered the nature of learning in makerspaces, which is active in nature and involves learning by doing.

It was noted that Seymour Papert’s focus on constructionism, where shared public learning occurs in a social environment, is helpful when considering the nature of learning in makerspaces. Next week, we’ll move from looking at underlying educational principles of makerspaces to review the nature and value of makerspaces in nurseries, schools, libraries, museums, and community spaces. We’ll see you then.

Congratulations! You have made it to the end of the first week. This week, we have examined the nature of creative learning in makerspaces.
