Hello welcome to the UEA’s medicine course for carers. Firstly I’d like to thank you for your interest in providing care. As a care worker your role is critical to the health and well-being of the residents with whom you will work. You will be stepping in where friends and family are not able to provide care themselves and they will always be grateful for the care and attention that you show to their loved ones. One of your responsibilities as a carer will be the administration of medicines to your residents. This course aims to give you the underlying knowledge that you will need to fulfil this role.

routes by which they should be given and any issues associated with administering medicines. You will also be able to look at the legislation and guidance around medicine supply in administration and be able to describe the records relating to medicine administration that should be kept in a care setting. We will do this through different teaching media - videos, presentations, signposting to further reading. Good luck and enjoy

Welcome to the UEA’s medicine administration course for carers. This course has been designed to help you understand the underlying principles and procedures when administering medicines.

This course is divided into 3 weeks. Each week contains various activities that you should aim to complete within the week. However, feel free to work at your own pace, whether you like to whizz through the weeks sooner or catch up from the beginning if you’re late starting.

During the 3 weeks, you will learn about:

  • The 6 ‘Rs’ of safe medicine administration: right resident, right medicine, right route, right dose, right time and resident’s right to refuse

  • The rules and guidance surrounding medicine administration

  • Medicine storage and record keeping requirements

This course provides opportunities for you to collaborate with others with similar interests in the comments sections. You can share your thoughts and reflect on your experiences or pose questions to help form your ideas. We can learn a lot from each other.

As you finish each step, just click the pink ‘Mark as complete’ button. You will then be able to see at a glance which steps you have completed on your ‘To do’ list, and so we can show you how much you’ve completed on your Progress page.

Enjoy the next 3 weeks and we look forward to reading your experiences in the comments sections.
