Sum-up of week 3

This article sums up the main points of week 3

Congratulations! You have completed week 3 of the course.

During this final week we examined three case studies: remittances in Africa; domestic and care work in Italy; and temporary labour migration in the Gulf Region.

We’ve considered remittances in terms of their micro and macro impact upon development. We looked at how the proliferation of migrant domestic labour in Italy can be understood in terms of dual labour market theory, global cities and this country’s family-centred welfare system. Finally, we discussed Indian migration to the Gulf through neoclassical economics and social network theory.

We hope that these three case studies have made you appreciate how theoretical frameworks can help us broaden our understanding of a range of issues regarding international migration. Ultimately, theories are not about making matters more complicated or abstract. Rather, they serve as our practical tools for making sense of processes and situations that at first sight may appear unique and incomparable.
