Welcome back to Week 2

Watch Dr Victoria Kain and Dr Elizabeth Forster as they welcome learners back to Week 2 of the course 'Assessing the Newborn'.
8.9
Hello everyone and welcome back. We’re so pleased you’ve joined us as we continue on with the course. Last week, we showed you how to conduct a systematic head to toe assessment of the newborn. The focus was very much on the normal newborn. This week, we consider some of the more common, abnormal findings that you need to be aware of along with early milestones of newborn development. This week, we’ll also be looking at skin care considerations for the newborn and the importance of checking on the interaction between mother and baby. We have lots to get through on our final week, so let’s get started. See you in the discussions.

You now know the steps to conduct a newborn assessment. What’s next?

Week 2 begins with an investigation into key characteristics of newborn skin. We’ll look at colouring and also how to best protect the baby’s skin.

We’ll then move on to an exploration of common abnormalities you may encounter in clinical practice. Our focus last week was very much on normal findings, but the reality is a percentage of precious newborns arrive into the world needing specialised care.

We touched on the benefits of skin to skin contact in Week 1 and we conclude the course with a deeper look into the importance of newborns bonding with their parents and the connection between this bonding and newborn development.

We hope you’re enjoying the course and are ready to start our second and final week.

See you in the discussions!
