Why offshore wind?
The offshore wind industry is growing extremely fast. It is estimated that around 1 million people are needed to join the sector in the next decade to help deliver the renewable electricity generation capacity that the world needs to stay on track to achieve net zero.
This would mean tripling the number of people working in the industry over the next 5 years. Currently, recruiting and developing skills for people into a wide range of roles is becoming a key constraint on our ability to reach the offshore wind targets many governments are setting.
There is therefore an urgent need to quickly scale up offshore wind knowledge and skills across the world – and this online training course aims to help those interested in the sector take their first step!
Offshore wind has three main benefits
- An indigenous and large-scale source of energy that has a stable and low price throughout its operation life because the fuel (or wind) is free.
- Offshore wind greatly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, and air pollution as part of a modern, renewable, electrified energy system.
- On top of generating cost-competitive electricity, offshore wind also creates local jobs and investment opportunities to benefit the wider economy.
