Introduction to Open Innovation

Open Innovation is a buzzword today, but it can be ambiguous and used quite loosely; it is important that you properly understand the ideas behind it. Therefore, we want to introduce you to the scientific background of Open Innovation including the underlying concepts and methodology.

In this module, you will first be introduced to the concept of openness and the main ideas behind open innovation; subsequently, you will learn about three Open Innovation methods; lastly, you will learn when to apply open innovation and what to keep in mind when working with Open Innovation methods.

  • At the End of this chapter you are familiar with the concept of openness, innovation and Open Innovation.
  • You understand the evolution of the concept of Open Innovation.
  • You know the basic principles of the lead user method, crowdsourcing and technology competence leveraging.
  • You know when to apply open innovation and what to heed for generating the desired impact.
