Three Selected Open Innovation Methods: Lead User Method

Gertraud introduces the Lead User Method in this video.

The first method we want to introduce is the Lead User Method (Von Hippel, 1986). It consists of two steps:

  1. Lead user search & identification
  2. Lead user workshop

Aim: Finding and working with carefully selected brilliant minds with a specific problem-solving capability

Type of Open Innovation: Outside-in Open Innovation as knowledge is brought into the organization that runs the project

Positioning along the innovation process: Early stage (Idea evaluation and filtering / concept development)

Example: Data centres produce a lot of heat, cooling uses high amount of energy. Which materials/design would make cooling obsolete? Search for lead users in heat-resistant electronics, as in this field experience with materials/designs that make cooling obsolete might be available
