Three Selected Open Innovation Methods: Crowdsourcing

In this video Dr. Leimüller speaks about crowdsourcing.

This is probably a method you have already heard about: Crowdsourcing (Howe, 2006). There are 2 types that follow the same mechanisms, but are based on very different targets:

  • Solution crowdsourcing
  • Problem crowdsourcing

Aim:

  • For solution crowdsourcing: Leveraging the creativity of the crowd for idea generation and product development
  • For problem crowdsourcing: Leveraging real-life experience and knowledge about problems for research or product development

Type of Open Innovation: Outside-in Open Innovation just like in the Lead User method example

Positioning along the innovation process: Very early stage (problem definition, concept development)

Example: Research organizations want to open their research process to identify topics important for society, identify under-researched questions and problems that lack answers by asking a crowd. With the help of a defined user crowd who knows about the pressing topics, valuable input can be collected and evaluated based on pre-defined criteria.
