Three Selected Open Innovation Methods: Technology Competence Leveraging

In this video Dr. Leimüller discusses technology competence leveraging.

The “youngest” among the three introduced Open Innovation methods is Technology Competence Leveraging (Keinz & Prügl, 2010):

Aim: Finding new application fields and expanding commercialization opportunities for existing technologies (40% – 90% of existing patents are not used!)

Type of Open Innovation: Outside-in Open Innovation as the organization wants to apply their knowledge elsewhere

Positioning along the innovation process: Very late (market introduction)

Example: The packaging industry has specific material with specific barrier functions used in the food sector and would like to apply their great product outside of their core industry (packaging). Therefore, they search for different application fields where their product provides advantages or added value to existing solutions.

Now you already know quite a bit about openness, Open Innovation and specific methods. In the last lesson of the chapter, you will learn about the many opportunities that Open Innovation methods provide to produce impact on different organizational and societal levels.
