Two Case Studies: STRUCINSPECT

Gertraud speaks with Stefan Kreppel about the challenge in the company to develop new solutions within traditional structures.

STRUCINSPECT venture, as an outcome example from Palfinger 21st, is a consortium with external stakeholders who developed a software as a service approach to do structural inspections in a different manner than it is done today.

Based on market development and infrastructure, it won’t be feasible to only use existing solutions, novel solutions are required because of the way infrastructure is built and used today. However, it is difficult for classical companies to develop novel solutions for existing problems because of the classic innovators’ dilemma: Without high pressure to change the management wants to optimize existing structures and processes and does not invest resources to invent novel solutions.

At Palfinger, it was therefore necessary to build a novel team with a start-up-like freedom to learn and experiment despite risks and uncertainties.
