What is Wrong with Publish-or-Perish Culture?

The next video is about publish-or-perish culture, which is built on two rules: Publish as many articles as possible, and publish them in journals with the highest possible impact factor, optimizing your whole academic life according to these two rules.

This traditional research assessment culture is well fixed within the whole science system. However: what the scientists are rewarded for, is not what the scientific institutions were made for! What we do in reality is much broader than what we measure within the narrow and simplistic metrics of publish-or-perish culture.

Since 2012 a growing group of people promote the idea of using alternative metrics. Here, DORA comes into play: the “San Francisco Declaration of Research Assessment”, recommends eliminating the use of Journal Impact Factors in funding and promotion considerations.
